How to Sew an Elastic Waistband
In this tutorial I show you how to insert an elastic waistband inside a casing. This way of making a waistband is very popular for sewing the children's or women's garments having along waist an elastic strip.
Here you get some tips on how to sew such waistband correctly, without twisting and turning the elastic into the casing.
To do waistband with casing more quality you need have an overlock machine.
For using this technique is desirable to use ribbed knit fabrics.
Sew both sides of your waistband fabric together and press the seam, as shown.
Now fold the strip in half and press it.
Wrap an elastic tape around your waist and mark the edges where need to cut it.
Don't forget add seam allowances to both edges of elastic.
Sew both ends elastic together using a regular straight stitch, as shown. I usually open these seam allowances and sew along every of them, as shown. It helps to sew the elastic strip together securely.
Now you need divide the casing into four equal segments with chalk.
Now you need fold your ribbed knit strip in half and insert into casing an elastic tape.
Note: The marks of the elastic and waist strip must match.
Before stitching you need to pin in four points through the elastic and fabric strip, as shown.
At this stage preparatory work of waistband is completed and it is time use the sewing machine and an overlock.
Now you need sew the two edges of casing together around the entire waistband, as shown.
Note: Do not pierce the elastic tape during sewing.
If you will overlock this edge you need trim the edge, as shown.
Before attaching casing with elastic to top of skirt or pants take a chalk and mark the waistband into four equal pieces.
Pin your waistband casing with elastic tape inside it to the waistline of the skirt or pants.
All four pair of marks on waistband and waistline of skirt (pants) should be combined.
Now it is time to overclock these layered edges casing to the skirt or pants together around the entire waistband.
Note: Place the knit fabric your clothing away from the overlock knives.
