Vertical Oscillating Shuttle Hook System
Before buying a new sewing machine you need to know the differences in features between different models of sewing machines. The feature that has a main role is the shuttle hook system (rotary or oscillating type).
Most of old sewing machines and some inexpensive modern models have vertical oscillating shuttle hook system. Tin this post is tutorial how works oscillating hook device and tips to fix it yourself.
Vertical rotary shuttle and oscillating hook systems create the same lockstitch stitches but make it differently.
Such models of sewing machines (entry-level) have oscillating type of hook.
Oscillating hook looks like that.
To pull out the bobbin case you need take this latch and pulls toward you this lever.
How to disassemble the oscillating shuttle device
Holding the "tail" with fingers you need to pull out the bobbin case first.
Let's take a closer and look what's inside the oscillating shuttle device.
But first you need turn both retaining ring clips, as shown on photo.
Now you can remove the locking ring including the scarfed shuttle hook.
Conditions for normal work the shuttle device
Take a magnifying glass and inspect surface of the hook. It should be smooth without scratched and rusted areas. The hook tip should be sharp.
If the sewing machine skips stitches very often the first thing you need to do check this clearance.
This plate must not be tightly pressed against the driver.
The rotary or oscillating hooks require regularly cleaning with double sided lint brush.
Shafts of all rotating parts a shuttle hook must be periodically oiled.

How does the oscillating shuttle hook system
Industrial sewing machines, including some home models (computerized sewing machine), have a hook that is rotated in a full circle. Sewing entry-level machines (for price 200-300$) have hook that oscillates back and forth.
This is the first step of the hook rotation. In this position hook tip must fits to the needle the needle closely and must slide above the needle eye. Hook tip should slide higher by approximately 1.5 mm.
Only under such conditions the hook can grab up the upper thread from the needle and next move it to right.
This is extreme position of the hook at right. In this position the thread slips off the point a hook. The thread take up lever begins quickly to pull bottom thread up. In such way is formed stitch regular sewing machine having oscillating hook device.
Once it has done this, the hook reverses its direction and returns to its original location.
In this left position the shuttle is ready repeat your incomplete rotation and create a new stitch.
