Taking Your Body Measurements
Correct measurements of your body are the main condition for making an accurate pattern. Learn how to take your body measurements easily and correct.
Note: For best results you need use a flexible measuring tape, not a metal one.
The main measure your body is the circumference of your chest. Take this measure carefully. The flexible measuring tape must pass along the highest points of the breast and under your armpits, around your shoulder blades.
Place the measuring tape around the natural waistline: not tight. Do not retract the stomach and stay in a natural position for you.
To take the hips circumference you need to place the tape around the fullest part of the legs and over the largest part of your buttocks. Hips measurement is best done together.
Measure the inner length between the legs. This measurement is needed to drafting kid's pants.
Neck measure is needed to drafting the shirts. Measure the circumference around the base of the neck: not tight.
Sleeve length is measured from the shoulder edge to the wrist.
Shoulder length is measured from neck line to the end the shoulder.
To take the body rise measurement you need to sit on the flat chair. The length from waistline to the chair is a body rise measure. This measure is equal to the length from the natural waistline to the crotch level. This measure is needed to drafting the pattern of trousers.
Trouser length is measured on the outside of the leg from waistline to the bottom line (hemline). Trouser length is measured by a different person.
Skirt length is measured from waistline to the hem line.
Take the circumference around the wrist at the bone. Add to this circumference value a slack to make a comfortable cuff fitting.
