Steps to Shirring with Elastic Thread
You like shirring technique but you not tried shirring yet do it yourself? Many of us especially beginners are terrified to sew with elastic thread. In fact shirring for beginner is no walk in the park. But using my tutorial having a plurality of tips and high-quality and detailed photos you can do the assembly on the first try.
Shirring is a great technique for decoration for skirt waists, shirt hems and even entire bodices! In this tutorial you learn how to sew with elastic thread.
You need to know that sew with elastic thread best suited the light cotton fabrics. The heavy weights fabrics like wool won't shirr at all.
For shirring you need use two different threads.
Now you need thread the needle with usual thin thread. For the winding a bobbin use an thick elastic thread.
When you're shirring you must wind the elastic thread on the bobbin only manually without using of sewing machine's bobbin winder.
Don't pull tightly the elastic thread, wind the bobbin carefully and easily without tension of thread's turns.
Cut this end a thread as close as possible to the surface a side of bobbin.
Now it's time prepare a sewing machine to sew with elastic thread. Place the bobbin into the bobbin case or just into the machine if you have a top-loading bobbin (horizontal rotary hook).
After placing the bobbin in the bobbin case pull the thread through the plate and check its tension. If the thread would normally go through do not do anything. If the thread would go through very hard you can loosen it. Turn the screw half a turn to the left.
Only after this adjustment, the sewing machine will sew an elastic thread normal.
Now place the bobbin case (or bobbin) in hook device a sewing machine.
You are remembering that in the top of your machine you'll be using regular thread. In my tutorial I use a contrasting color thread. You need to choose the color of both threads like fabric.
I'm going to use most long stitches. Set the stitch length regulator at the position having maximum value.
For shirring with elastic thread use the universal presser foot and select usual mode of the work a sewing machine (straight stitch).
Now set the stitch selector to position of straight stitch.
Now put the presser foot down and turn the flywheel around. Pull the needle thread and lift the elastic thread from a slit of needle plate.
Pull the both threads under the presser foot. This will prevent the ingress long ends of the thread into the stitches during shirring.
If you are beginner and you want get good result first try shirring on a scrap of fabric. After it you can sew with elastic thread on your skirt or dress and any garment.
Look at wrong side of your test fabric. May be needed to loosen the tension a top thread or tighten. In my example the tensions of the needle thread and bobbin thread are normal.
I turned my tension dial up to 4 but your sewing machine can have different values. The top thread tension varies depending on tension of bottom elastic thread
Now it's time start sewing shirring with elastic thread along or across your fabric.
See how you need to sew many rows with elastic thread without cutting the thread on end a line.
It's a good idea to turn and do 3-4 stitches along the edge of the fabric. Now you can start sewing backwards.
The next row of shirring with elastic thread you need make the same way.
First and second rows of shirring should seem very loose, but wait a bit. At the end of shirring all rows will work together very tough.

Every pair of the long ends of the thread you need to link together.
The shirring with elastic thread can be used for decoration the sleeves of shirts or dresses.
The shirring can be used for sewing garment your dolls.
Once you have sewn all lines don't forget use an iron. Not press it strong better hold your iron very lightly over shirred stitches using a steam.
