How to Draft a Pencil Skirt Pattern
In this lesson you will learn how to draft a pencil skirt pattern without paper. We will build a pattern skirt scheme directly on the fabric.
Hello I am Natalia!
Now I'm going to show you how to draft a skirt pattern quickly and easily without wasting a lot of time on building drawing on the paper. Womens or girls skirt pattern can be done in under an hour. Try it!
But you need first to get your body three measurements: waist, hips, and length a skirt. Waist to hip measurement i use constant 21-22cm. Such waist-to-hip measurement is suitable for any girls having growth 165-175cm.
You can test the distance between your waist and hip yourself. To do this vertical measurement correct tie yarn around yourself at both levels (waist and hips).
Note! Knowing how to get your waist and hips measurements accurately is the way to having perfectly-tailored skirt. Hold the measuring tape snugly, but you shouldn't be sucking in.
This pattern of women's skirts is suitable for girls or women having standard measurements of waist and hips. Pattern has sizes from 42 to 48 or 4-10 (USA).
The growth of girls must be anywhere from 165cm to 175cm.
The wide smooth surface of a table is recommended. But if you not have such wide and long table use any other surface. The fabric can be decomposed on the floor.
Tip for beginners! I recommend pinning the edge of the fabric.
OK, we'll continue to draft the skirt's pattern. Grab your ruler and chalk and draw vertical line. This distance from the edge of the fabric is 5-6 cm.
This pattern has closed slit at bottom of back piece a skirt.
If you want a pencil skirt back piece with invisible slits you can make them by using overlapping pieces. View details for the sewing technique how to do closed slit you can on other pages this website.
So, take a chalk and let's draft a slit with few straight lines. First you need to calculate top point of the slit. The distance from the hips line to this point is of 15-20 cm.
Now we're going to draw vertical lines of the front and back parts a skirt. These distances are 1/4 of hips measures. On back part you'll need to do a tiny bit of math and add 1cm.
The bottom part a pattern a pencil skirt is finished. Now move to the top a pattern - waistline of a skirt.
Using such math you can easy calculate these points.
Draw a two straight lines and create two curved lines as shown in the photo.
The plain darts on the waistline add shape to skirt. These photos show you how to draw it on front and back parts of pattern.
The waist line of pencil skirt should be adjusted.
From the new point draw a straight line.
Now you need to draw such curved line.
While many patterns of skirts come without the darts this skirt has two pair darts - on front and back parts. Repeat this dart creation for the front piece the pattern.
Note, the front darts are narrower and shorter.
Your pattern of pencil skirt is ready for cutting.
Finally mark off on the fabric the place of the waistband.
Don't forget add 4cm for the hem a skirt and adjust the seam allowances using this size.
Now your pattern of pencil skirt is ready for sewing.
Tip for beginner - test this pattern of skirt before you cut into the good fabric.
