How to Make a Knit Patch Pocket

If you tried sew patch pockets of the knit fabric to t-shirt you must know how it is hard to do. All sides of pockets are stretched, the seams become wavy and crooked. Exterior of the pocket becomes very rough and ugly.
If you will be sew t-shirt of knitted fabrics this tutorial help you sew patch pocket to the knit fabric easy and correct.

Begin by drafting a paper pattern and cutting the knit patch pocket.
To the main size a pocket you need add seam allowance 1 cm (1/2"). On the top of the pocket you can make 1,5 cm (5/8") seam allowance.
If you have little experience mark the hem allowance along the edges of the pocket with water soluble marking tool.

First, you need serge the top of the pocket.

Fold the top to the wrong side a knit fabric and press it.

Fold and press other edges, as shown.

Next, you need sew a top hem using desired stitch and press it to finish a preparatory work.

Mark the square outline on front part your garment with water soluble marking tool.
Place the patch pocket to your knit garments.
Join this detail to the fabric with pins (or baste it).

It is always best to baste a patch pocket to a garment. But in any case it is very difficult to sew the knit patch pocket nice and tidy. Try to do it on a scrap piece of fabric before sewing it on your garments.

During stitching any knit fabrics I recommend to use an awl.

Press it with steam iron and your patch pocket is ready.

Note: This method of applying patch pockets of knit fabrics will yield perfect results only after the trial exercise. Add a pocket to the scrap piece of knit or sew such patch pockets to old garments of knit fabrics before sewing it on your sewing project.
