Learn How to Cast On
You are not familiar with the knitting machine but it is in your home? And you want to learn how to work a knitting machine having had no previous machine knitting experience?
In this case, this lesson will help you make the first row of the knitted fabric. I show you how to bind off the e-wrap stitch on the flat bed machine without the ribber.
Note: this tutorial shows one of many ways how can to do a first row.
Let's do a simple e-wrap cast on and knit few rows of knitted fabric.
A knitting machine pulls the yarn through the yarn tensioner, knitting carriage and needles. At first pull the thread out from skein (the inner end of the yarn) and insert it in the yarn tensioner.
Do not miss insert the yarn into the eyelet of the take-up spring.
At the beginning of knitting you must to skip needles in work (one by one) in between working needles. Use the knitting machine pusher. It names yet needle selector. The needle selector you need use very often. It is necessary for proper location and quickly selecting needle position for ribbing or Intarsia knitting etc.
For test working use a small number of needles (40-60 needles). But keep in mind that the calculation is made from the center of the needle bed. Therefore the counter stays in center of the needle bed. Thus you have push to me 20 needles (10 on the left side and 10 on the right side).
Note: at this step you need to push every second needle only.
First you need to bind the end yarn to left clamp of knitting machine. Now holding of the yarn with fingers the right hand to wrap the yarn counter-clockwise around every needle beginning to do wraps from the left side of needle bed.
Look on the latches! They are located forwards and the all wraps of yarn will lie behind.
Step by step you will to wrap all needles and reach the last needle in work. Do not pull the thread too tight. During knitting the yarn can be tearing inside the carriage.
Before to knit the first row you need push down all needles using the needle selector to position needles - D.
Depending on the model of knitting machine the latches of needles must be lifted by hand.
Now you need insert the thread into the knitting machine carriage which had previously been put on the right side of a needles bed. Drag the yarn on the "gate" and close the gate lever.
It's time to knit the first row but it would be better if to hang on yarn cast-on comb.
And now you can knit the first row. Gently and slowly move the carriage to left.
Make sure the yarn is threaded through the tension unit properly and that select the value on the tension dial. For first rows (3-4) better to set on the tension dial more weak tension (6-8).
If you are relatively new to machine knitting you do not know common technical terms and phrases that are associated with machine knitting. Therefore I think using these photos better than writing technical terms. I hope you will understand how to cast on and will make the first row easy and correct.
Note: there are other methods to cast on for flatbed home knitting machines.
