Blind Hem Stitch with a Sewing Machine

The blind hem stitching on sewing machine is perfect for hemming garments from woolen or some other thick fabrics. In this case the hem stitches are barely noticeable.
A blind hem with sewing machine is almost impossible to make without the traces on the thin fabrics such as chiffon etc. Learn this tutorial how to create blend hem using a special foot and you will know the easy and fast way how to hem your pants, dress and skirt.

The blind hem presser foot

As I said above you need have special blind hem foot. It might look like this or a little differently but it is a special foot designed to perform blend hem stitches and other operations (overlock over-edge).

How to mark a hem line

Firstly, mark a hem line using a ruler and chalk.

Now you need serge the edge of fabric

Now you need serge the edge of the fabric using the possible way for you. Let's say you have only zigzag sewing machine. Both these presser feet can be used for it.

The kind of seam fo blind hem

The second condition for blind hem with sewing machine is a special kind of seam (F or G) similar to zigzag stitch (C). Hem stitch is a standard stitch that has most modern models of sewing machines. In extreme cases, you can use simple zigzag stitches.

Replace the universal presser foot to the hem foot

Just for fun, we find out how you can quickly and without a trace hem your garments. Firstly you need replace the universal presser foot to the hem foot.
Secondly, fold the hem and take it to your machine. It should be wrong side up, as shown.

Set stitch selector to the F position

Start sewing with the smallest speed of the sewing machine. Note: If the garment is on the left set stitch selector to the F position. On the right side set stitch selector to the G position.

Start sewing with the smallest speed of the sewing machine. If you have no experience of such work you need watch out for each zig zag stitch that touches the edge of folded fabric.

The needle should be go as close as possible to the edge

The needle should be going as close as possible to the edge of the folded fabric. In such case on the front side your garment will not be visible the stitches or they will be hardly noticeable.
