How to Sew Bias Tape around Right Angles
This is third article on 'How to Sew Bias Tape' in which I will show you the technique with steps how to sew bias tape around corners at a 90 degree angle (blanket etc.).
Here you will find the easy way how to join each of two parts of bias strip at a 45 degree angle also.
For this tutorial I used pieces of fabrics that are imitate the corner of the blanket and one short bias strip carved by hand.
Steps of cutting and making the bias strips by hand you can find in post: How make bias tape and sew to neckline.
Pin both parts of blanket before.
Note: In this learning tutorial I will do one corner of the blanket only.
Stitch two or more parts of blanket along the edges, as shown.
Note: This seam should be hidden after attaching the bias strips.
Now is the time to prepare the tape using steam iron.
Fold bias tape edges together, as shown. Between the upper and lower parts must be small gap. This trick will help the needle catch end of the tape on wrong side a blanket.
Now we are ready to sew bias tape along the corner.
First off, start with marking the places where is the angle on strip during sewing it. You must pre-compute this place (places) and mark this point with a pencil.
From center point draw lines at the 45 degree angle, as shown on this photo.
Stitch along marked lines without reaching the edge of the tape, as shown.
Unnecessary portions of the fabric above the seams can be trim with scissors.
Now we need to turn the corner on face side with a pen or other sharp tool.
And we need to pin the bias strip to the fabric superposing the angles of the tape and blanket together.
Now pin the bias tape around four corners and edges of blanket.
This center line of the folded tape should pass along the edge of the blanket. This fold should not go lower or too high from this edge.
Now is time to begin making the most difficult matter - to sew a bias tape along corners and edges of blanket with straight and beautiful seam on both sides of tape.
Note: Do not try repeating my master class. Beginners must to sew the bias tape in two stages. I recommend for beginners use baste stitching before sewing.
In this tutorial I show you only an easy way how to sew with bias tape about corner.
I started sew a bias tape from the middle of one side a blanket but I recommend you start sewing the bias tape from the middle of a corner to the next corner of a blanket.
Learn to sew! It is not only an interesting exercise but sometimes may be very useful matter. For example, if you can make your own quilt you can save a considerable amount of family budget.
